There are numerous hotels in Athens and when trying to choose which one to stay at I stumbled onto the King George Palace Hotel Athens.
I have to say that it was a fantastically fortunate stumble!
The King George Palace Hotel is located on Syntagma Square and was originally built as a small urban palais that served as an annex to the Palace, which then occupied the building that housed the Greek Parliament on the squares eastern flank.
Later, it served briefly as the prime ministers residence before being acquired by a Greek businessman who added several floors and converted it into a hotel.
One of its first guests was King George II, who made it his haunt. In the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, it was also the favorite hotel of international celebrities, magnates, world leaders, and movie stars like Aristotle Onassis and Maria Kallas, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco, Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, and François Mitterrand.
**Note the hotel is co-located with the Grande Bretagne and since both are owned by Starwood guests have access to the facilities in both hotels.
A lovely confirmation email arrived along with a follow up a few days prior to ensure a smooth check-in
The check in process was very smooth.
I requested an upgrade however the hotel was full and the staff was very apologetic that this request could not be accommodated.
The very attentive staff gathered all of our bags and had them transported to our room while we were checking in.
Beautifully decorated with in a classic old world style mixed with modern conveniences
Delicious treat with taste of almonds but with 27% alcohol better for sipping!
Spacious room with a super comfortable king sized bed
Beautiful hard wood floors throughout our room
We did have a small problem with our safe which was handled promptly.
Full of plenty luxurious towels and Korres toiletries
Spacious with a rainhead shower made for a true spa-like experience
Available on the rooftop Tudor Hall Restaurant
We opted to sit outside and enjoy the gorgeous view
Extensive buffet for 25 Euro per person
By the smiles it was all good
*Note the hotel does have a gym and guests are encouraged to take advantage of the Grande Bretagne Spa amenities including the pool but we were too busy exploring Athens, shopping, stuffing our faces and enjoying the royal treatment to partake!!!
Next time, though, I promise!!!
